Protecting Yourself From Online Scams and Account Fraud

June 2026

Financial scams are becoming more sophisticated. Fraudsters can use convincing emails, fake websites, text messages, phone calls, social media profiles, and voice-cloning technology to impersonate financial institutions, trusted contacts, or people you know. These tools can make fraudulent requests seem more personal and credible, increasing the risk that someone may act before taking time to verify the request.

Anyone can be targeted. The best defence is to slow down, verify the request, and ask questions before clicking a link, sending money or providing personal information.

THREE STEPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF

  • Pause before taking action.
  • Verify the request through a trusted channel.
  • Contact Pembroke if you are unsure about a request involving your account.

WATCH FOR RED FLAGS

A legitimate financial institution or advisor should not pressure you to make an immediate decision or ask you to keep a security matter secret.

Be cautious if someone:

  • asks for your password, two-factor authentication code, credit card PIN, banking details or social insurance number;
  • asks you to click a link to “verify” your account;
  • discourages you from contacting your Pembroke representative directly;
  • asks you to keep the matter secret from family members, law enforcement, or other trusted professionals;
  • asks you to transfer money urgently or to a new destination;
  • promises unusually high or guaranteed returns with little or no risk.

HOW PEMBROKE HELPS PROTECT YOU

Protecting client information is an important part of our relationship with you. While no system can eliminate every risk, Pembroke has procedures in place to help reduce the risk of unauthorized access, impersonation, and payment diversion.

Client Portal Security

Pembroke’s online client portal allows clients to view account information. Transactions cannot be initiated through the portal. However, unauthorized access could still allow someone to view personal or account information. For that reason, Pembroke strongly encourages clients to enable two-factor authentication.

Trade Instructions

Pembroke does not accept trade instructions by email. This helps reduce the risk that a fraudster could impersonate a client and attempt to initiate a transaction.

Redemption Proceeds

When funds are redeemed, proceeds are sent only to the bank account on file. Requests to update banking information are subject to careful controls and verification.

Sensitive Communications

Pembroke uses encrypted email when sending sensitive content. Clients can help by keeping their contact information up to date, using strong and unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication where available, and contacting Pembroke directly if they receive a suspicious message.

WHAT TO DO IF SOMETHING SEEMS SUSPICIOUS

If something feels unusual, stop before taking action. Do not transfer funds, click links, download attachments, or provide banking details, passwords, verification codes, or personal information.

Check the facts using a trusted channel. Keep a record of suspicious communications and contact your Pembroke representative directly using information you know to be accurate. Do not rely on contact information provided in a suspicious message.

A SIMPLE RULE

Fraudsters want people to move quickly. Investors should do the opposite.

Pause. Verify. Ask for help.

One extra conversation can help protect your information, your accounts and your long-term financial security.
